Big Finish Doctor Who chronology

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Big Finish Doctor Who chronology lists the intended placement of the Big Finish Productions line of audio adventures based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who.

In the original television series run from 1963–1989, each serial was assigned a production code. For their plays, Big Finish assigns each one a similar production code which aids its placement in the programme's sequence of stories.

The vast majority of audio plays serve to fill unexplained gaps in the series, such as the (apparently long) period between Season 23 and Season 24, the period between the final television season in 1989 and the Fox Network Doctor Who television movie in 1996, and the period between that movie and the revivial of Doctor Who on television in 2005.

Other plays are produced as "side steps" or take place in alternative realities, referencing material from other spin-off material like the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip and the Virgin New Adventures novels. It should be noted that, as with all spin-off media, the precise canonicity of the audio plays is unclear.

In the listing of production codes and stories below, the audio plays are listed in bold.

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ Excelis Dawns is set within the final episode of Frontios
  2. ^ In The Gathering, the Doctor says that he has left Peri and Erimem in Monte Carlo, making this story contemporaneous with The Gathering. The Veiled Leopard was released after The Council of Nicaea.
  3. ^ The original TARDIS sound effects are used here, so this story is placed before Project: Lazarus and Master
  4. ^ According to producer Gary Russell this is where Legend occurs.
  5. ^ As Erimem has joined the TARDIS crew and her pet cat Antranak is present, this has to take place after The Eye of the Scorpion and before Nekromanteia. No Place Like Home was released after The Church and the Crown.
  6. ^ The Doctor Who Reference Guide website suggests, as the Seventh Doctor is travelling alone, that it takes place near the end of his incarnation, possibly after The Sirens of Time.
  7. ^ Ace and Hex's easy banter indicates this is some time after Hex has joined the TARDIS crew. The Veiled Leopard was released after Night Thoughts.
