Bhimsen Thapa (1775-1839) was the first prime minister of Nepal. He is regarded as one of the National heroes of Nepal.

Thapa was born in Gorkha. He became personal secretary of the King Rana Bahadur Shah at the age of 23 when in exile in Varanasi in India. He became the first Prime Minister of Nepal after the assassination of the king by king's half brother; which general Bhimsen Thapa took as a chance to wipe out his enemies.

Thapa served for 32 years under three kings. He declared war on the British East India Company in 1814 as the commander of the army and as the prime minister. He brought about several military, judicial, social and economic reforms in Nepal.

Eventually, he was forced to retire by the king by conspiracy charges. Later, he was forced to kill himself.
