Bhartṛhari

Bhartṛhari (570-651?) born in Ujjain (in Malwa region) of Central India, was a Hindu philosopher and a poet. His works include a treatise in Sanskrit called Vākyapadīya (sometimes also spelled Vaakyapadeeya), which literally means ‘words in a sentence’. This is a scholarly work based on philosophy of Indian grammar (particularly Sanskrit) and several other traditional schools of thought, and is considered a very significant work on the philosophy of language. According to George Cardona, “Vakiyapadiya is considered to be the major Indian work of its time on grammar, semantics and philosophy.”
