Roberto Luis Gaspar de Deus Severo, OIH, born in Lisbon, 3 May 1976),known as Beto (pron. IPA: ['bɛtu]), is a Portuguese football player.
He was a leading player as a defender for Sporting and also a regular presence on the Portugal. He was, before leaving the club, Sporting's captain.
He won the National Championship title, twice, in 1999-00 and 2001-02. He first debuted at the National Team, in the 1-1 draw with Germany, in Berlin, at 6 September 1997, and has been an usual player since then. He played at the 2002 World Cup and at European Football Championship 2000 and 2004.
In January 2006, he signed for Bordeaux for €1 million. But in last day of summer transfer window, he was sent on loan to La Liga newcomer Recreativo de Huelva.
He is known for early in his career scoring some important goals, namely against F.C. Porto, but also for scoring two own goals in a single match against rivals Benfica.
