[edit] Personal life

Beth Smith a.k.a Alice Barmore[3][4][5][6] was in the bail bond business in Colorado as a competitor to Duane Chapman's sister.

She was still signing legal documents using the name Alice E. Barmore as of May 26th, 2006.[7]

She and Chapman live with three children -- her daughter Cecily, from a previous marriage, and two children (Bonnie Jo and Garry) with her current husband. Duane has several other children from previous marriages.[8]

It may not be true that she has been Duane Chapman's common law wife for 16 years; she married Keith A. Barmore in Denver on 8/26/1991. [9]

Beth is the mother of four children. She lost custody of her first child, reportedly named Dominic. [citation needed] She also is the mother of Cecily. She has two children with Duane Chapman: Bonnie Jo and Garry.[10]

One of Duane Chapman's daughters, Barbara Katie Chapman, was killed in a car accident near Fairbanks, Alaska, on May 19, 2006, the day before Smith and Chapman's wedding. [11]

[edit] September, 2006

Ms. Chapman became embroiled in a bit of controversy when she was detained and held for a contempt hearing after it was discovered she was wearing a microphone when she tried to attend a bail hearing for Duane Chapman.[12] Cell phones and electronic recording equipment are banned from federal courthouses by law. [13]

[edit] Previous legal problems

Smith, under the name Alice Barmore, was a bailbondsman in Colorado previously, but no longer has a license there.

Court records from Denver, Colorado show an Alice E. Smith, same birthdate 29 October 1967 facing numerous charges (including shoplifting, disturbing the peace, assault and carrying a concealed weapon) in 1988 and 1989. [14]Court cases are:

  • 88GS843535 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
  • 88GS845382 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
  • 89GS016092 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967
  • 89GS019417 SMITH ALICE E 10/29/1967

In 2002 she faced (as Alice Barmore) the following charges in a Jefferson County, Colorado court under case number 2002-cr-000080: 18-3-207(1)(A)(B)(I) Extortion-Unlawful Act F418-3-303, False Imprisonment M218-5-102 (1) (c), Forgery- Check/Commercial Instrument F518-3-207 (1)(a)(b)(l), Extortion-Unlawful Act-CSP F518-3-303 and False Imprisonment-CSP M3.

[edit] Garry L. Smith

Beth Smith's father (who appeared on the TV show) is identified as being a first baseman for the Kansas City A's; a search of the Baseball Almanac does not reveal any player with that name ever playing for the Kansas City A's.

Newspaper Article: Joplin Globe, January 7, 1958. "Garry Smith, former Joplin high school basketball and baseball star is assigned by the Kansas City Athletics to Little Rock of the Southern Association this year. The first baseman broke in with Crowley, La., of the Evangeline League last season, but an injury cut his 1957 play short. Smith is to report at Orlando, Fla., March 10." (1958)
