Betfred Gold Cup
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Betfred Gold Cup is a Grade 3 National Hunt horse race in the United Kingdom for five-year-old and above horses run over a distance of 3 miles 5½ furlongs (5,934 metres) at Sandown Park in late April.
It is a major late-season handicap chase, and has been won by many top class horses. There are twenty-four fences to be jumped in the race.
It was first run in 1957 as the Whitbread Gold Cup, and continued with that name until 2001. The following year it became the AtTheRaces Gold Cup, and changed to its present name in 2004 when the bookmaking company Betfred took over the sponsorship.
The Betfred Gold Cup meeting at Sandown Park combines both National Hunt and flat racing, and includes the Sandown Mile and the Sandown Classic Trial, both also currently sponsored by Betfred.
