Greatest Hits Volume Three: Best of the Brother Years 1970-1986 is a 2000 single disc compilation by The Beach Boys and released through Capitol Records. It was released several months after its predecessors, The Greatest Hits - Volume 1: 20 Good Vibrations and The Greatest Hits - Volume 2: 20 More Good Vibrations.
This CD gives the listener a short sited overview of The Beach Boys' Brother Records-era, which lasted from 1970 to 1986 (hence, the title). With a mediocre attempt made to represent all of their albums from Sunflower to The Beach Boys, it was inevitable that Dennis Wilson's songs were left off - despite being some of the best of the era.
It was decided by the producers of the album that since this is a one disc overview of the 1970-1986 era, only charting singles would be selected for this collection. However in doing so, they cut out some of the best music the Beach Boys recorded during this time. It is not a fair summary of the period and gives the uninitiated a lopsided idea of what The Beach Boys had on offer during this underappreciated time in their career.
