Best Days is a Britpop-style song performed by Blur on their fourth studio album The Great Escape.
[edit] Lyrics
Like most of the other songs on this album, the theme of the lyrics is loneliness. In this case, it is about a taxi driver who works in and around the London area. His hours of work are overnight, where there is hardly anybody about, compounding on his loneliness. He transports people from the London nightclubs back to their homes as 'the last train' has already left to 'leafy nowhere'.
Cabbie has his mind on a fare to the sun
He works nights but it's not much fun
Picks up the London yo-yo's
All on their own down Soho
Take me home
The lyrics are very descriptive of London, with locations like Soho and Trellick Tower mentioned in the lyrics.
[edit] Music
The song is more smooth than a lot of the others on the album, with largely chromatic high strings, falling guitar parts after each chorus, and a very light use of the drum kit and other percussion.
The piece starts with a solo drum rhythm before the bass guitar enters. The first verse is quite quiet until it leads to the chorus. The aforementioned falling guitar leads the music into verse two. Following the second chorus is a piano solo akin to that on The Beatles' "In My Life". After a repeated chorus, the music simply plays out on the tonic chord with a horn part added over the top. The piece ends exactly as it started, with a percussion rhythm.
[edit] Trivia
- The song is in C major and in 4/4 time.
- This song is the first on the album track listing which was not a single (tracks one and two were).
- In the album booklet, the songs lyrics are printed with a picture of the night sky in the background, which fits in with the lyrical theme.
