Bertie and Elizabeth

Bertie & Elizabeth is a 2002 television film produced by Carlton Television. The film explores the relationship between King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother) from their very first meeting to the King's death. Bertie and Elizabeth was commissioned especially for HM The Queen's Golden Jubilee and was broadcast on ITV1 during the period of national celebration.

King George VI is played by the established actor James Wilby, and the Queen Mother by Juliet Aubrey. There are also appearances from the late Sir Alan Bates and Dame Eileen Atkins, who play King George V and Queen Mary respectively.

The film begins with the intial meeting between the then Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and from then on the film moves on through their courtship, marriage and later succession to the throne.

The film demonstrates King George VI's struggle to overcome his stammer, the fear he feels towards his father and the punishing stresss the King was placed under during the abdication crisis.
