Bernardo Reyes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernardo Reyes (born in Guadalajara, Mexico, August 18503 February 1913) was a General in the army of Mexico under Porfirio Díaz, governor of Nuevo León and father of the writer Alfonso Reyes. Followers of Reyes were known as reyistas. In 1899 Reyes decided to run for president after Díaz gave an interview in which he said he would allow the next election to be freely contested. In the end the attempt failed and Díaz forced Reyes into exile.

In 1913 he participated with the nephew of former president Porfirio Diaz, Félix Díaz in a coup d'etat known as La decena tragica against the government of Francisco I. Madero, beginning February 9, 1913. Reyes was killed on the first day of the coup. The coup led the way for Victoriano Huerta to take over as President.
