Bernardo Guimarães was a Brazilian poet born August 15, 1825. His 1875 Isaura the Slave has been compared to Uncle Tom's Cabin in its importance to an abolitionist movement. Other works by him include O Garimpeiro and O Índio Afonso. He died in 1884.
