Az-Zahir Sayf ad-Din Barquq (ruled 1382–1399, also spelled Berkuk, Barkuk) was the first Sultan of the Mamluk Burji dynasty. Egypt had been ruled by the Mamluk Bahri dynasty up to 1377, when a revolt broke out in Syria which spread to Egypt, and the government was taken over by the Circassians Barakah and Berkuk. Berkuk was proclaimed sultan in 1382, ending the Bahri dynasty. He was expelled in 1389 but recaptured Cairo in 1390.
Berkuk became an enemy of Timur after Timur's invasion of Baghdad, and his intension to invade Syria. He prepared a large army to fight Timur, but Timur fled when he knew about Berkuk's army, while Berkuk expelled the remaining Mongol-Tatar armies.
Berkuk died in 1399; Bayezid I then invaded Syria, but came into conflict with Timur, who took Aleppo and other towns in 1400.
