Bergkamen is a town and a municipality in the district of Unna, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated near the river Lippe, approx. 15 km north-east of Dortmund and 15 km south-west of Hamm.
Bergkamen, a fairly new town in the East part of the Ruhrgebiet and south of the Münsterland, was founded in 1966 by the merging of 6 smaller communities. The town‘s history, however, reaches back to ancient Roman times - this can be experienced by visiting the Bergkamen Municipal Museum, which has a large Roman department, and the nearby archeological site, the “Roemerlager“.
Sports enthusiasts can really let off steam in Bergkamen. Besides walking, Nordic walking, running and cycling, you can also go swimming, ice-skating, fishing and horse riding in Bergkamen. Furthermore, you can play mini-golf, tennis and football or any other kind of ball game.
Watersports enthusiasts are welcome to visit the Westphalian Sports Boat Centre - Marina Ruenthe, with its 270 yachts and motor boats and a variety of gastronomical delights. Here you can enjoy a pleasant maritime atmosphere. People interested in chartering or learning to manoeuvre a boat are also very welcome. They can explore the Ruhrgebiet, using the many local waterways. The neighbouring national trust area, “Beversee“, and the wooded hill, “Grosses Holz“, a renaturalized former slag heap, provide an inviting atmosphere for relaxation.
Bergkamen is a lively town, open to new experiences and ideas, that is well-known throughout the region for its many cultural events, such as the Harbour Festival ("Hafenfest") in June or the Light Festival ("Lichtermarkt") in October. Furthermore, Bergkamen‘s theatre performances at the “studio theater bergkamen“ and numerous exhibitions in the town‘s own art gallery “sohle1“ or the “Stadtmuseum“ regularly inspire lots of visitors. Also highly impressing are the highly acclaimed light art installations in Bergkamen.
