Benque Viejo del Carmen

Benque Viejo del Carmen is a town in the Cayo District of the nation of Belize, with a population of about 8,000 people, mostly of Maya descent (Mestizos). It is the furthest west sizable population center in Belize, located about 81 miles west of Belize City, by the border with Guatemala. The town was established in the 19th century, mostly by immigrants from Guatemala. The ancient Maya ruins of Xunantunich are near by. This town is along a river called the "Mopan River". Over the past 5 years, the town has experienced a rapid boom in population. Benque is maily a suburban settlement with school, supermarkents and other facillities and is well known for its peaceful neighborhoods and warm people. The mayor is Mr. Marconi Sosa under the UDP. 8 miles to the east lies the town of San Ignacio and 1 mile to the west lies Melchor the Mencos, Peten in Guatemala. Both towns are very important shopping centers in the region.
