[edit] The Rugal Saga

Benimaru is born of half-Japanese and American descent while growing up in Japan. He is the third member of the "Japan Team" composed of Kyo Kusanagi and Goro Daimon. Kyo specialized at Kenpo and wielded fire-based powers, while Benimaru used shooting techniques and electricity. Goro used Judo and earth-based powers. They later entered the King of Fighters 1994 tournament, in which they engaged the host of the tournament, Rugal Bernstein.

The King of Fighters tournament held in 1995 saw the introduction of Iori Yagami, a member of the Yagami clan and rival of Kyo Kusanagi. This and the return of Rugal contributed to the disbandment of the Japan team during the 1996 tournament, in which Kyo decided to embrace his destiny and battle the Orochi. The final blow to their partnership came after Kyo's battle with Orochi. Kyo was nowhere to be found and Goro decided to return to the Judo world; Benimaru was on his own.

[edit] The NESTS conflict

After a full year had passed, Benimaru set out to find Kyo. Accompanied by Kyo's student, Shingo Yabuki, he came into contact with two strange men. One was a young man with white hair and dark features named K', the other a cyborg named Maxima. K' was a dark-hearted loner who wielded powers that emulated Kyo's, while Maxima was a kind man who was enhanced with cybernetic weapons. The two men seemed entranced with fighting in the King of Fighters '99 tournament. Though Benimaru trusted neither of them, he sensed that he might find Kyo if he followed these two, hence forming a team for entry in the King of Fighters tournament.

It was eventually revealed that a syndicate named "NESTS" had Kyo in custody and proceeded to use his DNA for various entities. One of these clones was an Irish fighter named Krizalid, who encountered the team at the conclusion of the tournament, who wished to defeat them and use the battle data for numerous Kyo Kusanagi clones across the planet. Krizalid was a formidable foe, as he not only possessed the Kusanagi flames, but a suit that memorized the fighting styles of his defeated enemies. The battle finally ended when an offensive attack by K' and Maxima weakened Krizalid's defenses long enough to be defeated by a fire attack from Kyo Kusanagi, who had recently escaped an NESTS underground facility.

In 2000, Benimaru once again teamed up with Shingo, but also brought along a fighter named Seth and a ninja named Lin to join his entourage.

The 2001 tournament saw a reunion of the Japan Team, with Shingo tagging along once again. Together, they succeeded in slaughtering the founder of NESTS, Igniz. After the battle, the group once again parted ways, but not before Kyo told Shingo "...to get a life".

[edit] The Resurrection of Orochi

With NESTS no longer posing a threat, Benimaru decided to enter the 2003 tournament with his friend Goro and, much to his chagrin, Shingo. Though everything seemed depressingly normal, there seemed to be something nefarious going on. As he would eventually find out, a shadowy group led by a mysterious man named Ash Crimson entered the tournament. Before they could do anything, they were transported to a remote area. Taking a moment to relax, Benimaru decided to compliment Shingo on his refined skills. Unfortunately, Shingo became arrogant and began to denounce Kyo, exclaiming that he is no longer his student, but his rival. Noticing Kyo emerging from the distance, Benimaru attempted to quell Shingo’s tirade (to no avail). Upon hearing these comments, Kyo beat Shingo senseless while Benimaru and Goro nervously looked on. Benimaru was heard to comment that "Shingo will always be a Shingo." while watching the beating. It is presumed that after this, Kyo told Benimaru and Daimon what Ash's intentions were.

Benimaru later visited France, along with his friend/rival Duo Lon of the Flying Brigands (Hizoku in Japan). The two were caught up in a bank robbery, which was soon stopped by the appearance of Elisabeth Blanctorche. After a brief bit of flirting from Benimaru, the two men told Elizabeth that Ash had stolen the Yata Mirror from Chizuru Kagura, and was coming after Iori Yagami's treasure next. The three formed a team and entered the next tournament together. The three, however, could not stop Ash, who had stole the Yasakani Magatama from Iori. When they arrived at the scene, Benimaru picked up the unconscious Kyo (presumably battered from fighting against the Rioted Iori) while Elizabeth attempted to interrogate Ash, who simply vanished, saying to tell Kyo that he was coming for him next.

[edit] Trivia

  • When he made his debut in King of Fighters 1994, Benimaru wears a waist-length sleeveless top. Recently however, his top is shorter, exposing his abs. Also, before King of Fighters 2003, his top is plain black (with short sleeves from '98 to 2002), while afterwards, it has a leopard spot motif. In the Capcom vs. SNK games, despite popular belief that he wears long sleeves, he actually wears a sleeveless top - what seem to be the sleeves are actually his gloves which go all the way up to his biceps.
  • Apparently, Benimaru has his hair up only when he is fighting or about to fight. In some pictures where he is in a break and his pre-fight intros in Capcom vs SNK, his hair flows down. This may be a rather exaggerated case of electrostatics.
  • Monster Maezuka has voiced Benimaru since his debut.
  • Benimaru's connections to the Hizoku Clan have been a point of intrigue about the character for sometime, but in fact from official story indicated that he just met Lin the first time in 2000, and from the event in the ending in 2000 made Benimaru mistaked Duo Lon for Ron/Long in their prefight intro in 2003.
  • Benimaru was based on the character Polnareff from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, right down to his outfit in KoFs 94 and 95. Even after Benimaru's name was decided on, the game developers continued to refer to him as Polnareff.
  • Benimaru also pays homage to the Tatsunoko character Hurricane Polymar. The attacks Shinkuu Katategoma, Handou Sandan Geri and Gen'ei Hurricane take their names and functions directly from the aforementioned character.
  • Benimaru is constantly being accused of being gay by the series' fans despite SNK's assurance that Benimaru is in fact, not. The way Benimaru poses and blows kisses may hint at it, but what fans cite the most is his voicing, despite him shouting his special move names with dedication, it's a winpose where Benimaru can be heard to say "Thank you." with an unmistakable lisp. This was especially apparent in early installments.
