Beneath Nightmare Castle (ISBN 0-14-032238-8) is a single player roleplaying gamebook written by Peter Darvill-Evans, illustrated by Dave Carson and originally published in 1987. It forms part of Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy series, numbered 25 in the original Puffin printing and not yet included in the recent Wizard reissuing. The book stands out for its blending of Gothic fantasy and the cosmic and visceral horror of HP Lovecraft. Some of the original illustrations of this book were banned for being too gruesome.
Particularly disturbing are the depictions of its many 'instant death' endings, in which the player may consider himself lucky if only the sanctity of his body is violated: more often than not, your sanity and even your very humanity may be perverted in the process by the ancient Cthullu inspired horrors that you will fight.
In this book the reader finds themselves in Neuburg, once a pleasant town in Khul, but now home to vile monsters begotten of warped sorcery. An age-old horror has been re-awoken deep beneath the Keep, and it is up to you to face it and free the town and your friend, Baron Tholdur, from evil enchantment. However, deep underground lie hideous traps and terrors.
