Bemmel
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bemmel is a village in Gelderland in the municipality of Lingewaard. It was previously a municipality of its own, but in 2001 it merged with Huissen and Gendt to form the new municipality Bemmel, which was later renamed Lingewaard.
Bemmel lies in between the two major cities of Gelderland, Arnhem and Nijmegen. Thus, in between the River Rhine and the River Waal. Nijmegen and Arnhem are both expanding in a fast tempo. Since bemmel lies in between, in the near future, Bemmel will become part of the suburbs of Nijmegen and Arnhem.
The first habitants of Bemmel can not be pointed sharply. Some people think that Bemmel was at one time possession of a rich Art and Antiques-trading family, who call themselves Strydhagen, or Strijdhagen. Others claim that Bemmel was at one time part of the rest of the region 'de Betuwe', property of the family Klaassen, the younger part of the family of the great duke Jan (or John) Klaassen (+ 915 AC).
It has a population of 12,189 (as at 1 January 2006).
