Bellman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Lewis Carroll's poem The Hunting of the Snark, the Bellman is the leader of the Snark hunting trip. He is a fine speaker, a handsome and inspiring man, but a rather poor sailor.

This was charming, no doubt; but they shortly found out

That the Captain they trusted so well

Had only one notion for crossing the ocean,

And that was to tingle his bell.

Carroll's Bellman also appears in Jasper Fforde's novel The Well of Lost Plots as the head of Jurisfiction.
