Bellingrath Gardens and Home

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bellingrath Gardens and Home 65 acres (263,000 m²) are gardens and a mansion located on the Isle aux Oies River in Theodore, Alabama. They are open daily for a substantial fee.

The Gardens include a bridal garden, conservatory, great lawn, nature walk, Oriental garden, and a rose garden, as well as a gallery of Boehm porcelain, a chapel, Mermaid Pool, Mirror Lake, an observation tower, and a river pavilion where river cruises are provided.

The gardens' original 60 acres were purchased in 1917 as a fishing camp by Walter Bellingrath, President of Mobile's Coca Cola Bottling Plant. Mrs. Bellingrath began developing the gardens with architect George B. Rogers in 1927, and the home was completed in 1935.
