Belfair, Washington

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Belfair is an unincorporated community located in Mason County, Washington. Located at the tip of the Hood Canal, a branch of Puget Sound, it mainly attracts tourists and nature activists in summertime. This triples the population in the summer season. The population within the Urban Growth Area (UGA) is an estimated 700. Located on an isthmus connecting the Kitsap and Olympic Peninsulas, Belfair receives an average rainfall of 60" yearly and has a growing season of 212 days.

Belfair is the home of Democratic Party congressman Norm Dicks, despite being the most Republican-friendly area of Mason County. Belfair is also home to Noah Ashenhurst, a local high school teacher and award-winning author of the novel Comfort Food.

Belfair is generally considered to be the largest community in Washington to not be recognised by the US Census in any form, even under the Census-designated place form. It is considered a topic candidate to become a CDP for the 2010 US Census.
