Beijing Normal University (Simplified Chinese: 北京师范大学; Traditional Chinese: 北京師範大學; pinyin: Běijīng Shīfàn Dàxué) is a university located in Beijing, P.R. China.

Beijing Normal University grew out of the faculty of Education of the Metropolitan University founded in 1902. In 1923, it was named Beijing Normal University and was established as a teacher training institution.

The university’s motto is “Study well, teach others. Be your best, set an example.”

The university has 16 schools, 30 departments, and 77 research centers and institutes. In addition, it holds one national key laboratory, one national special laboratory, and six ministry key laboratories.

BNU’s curriculum consists of teacher training, educational science, pure science and the humanities. BNU’s department of Chinese language and literature, history, mathematics, physics, psychology, school of life science, resource, and environmental science were named national training bases for humanities and science.

The Beijing Normal University is involved in international academic exchange programs with over 100 overseas universities and international organizations.

The university is on a semester system. Currently, 8400 undergraduate students and 8100 graduate students are enrolled. There are 10,000 adult students and 1700 international students.

There are 1300 full-time faculty members (300 professors, 600 associate professors, and 400 lecturers).

Beijing Normal University is the first university in China that has been authorized to grant doctoral degree in educational technology.

BNU is a member university of the “Project 211” and “Education Revival Project.” The university is recognized as a key institution by both the Ministry of Education and Beijing Municipality and received financial support from the two institutions.
