Be Not Nobody is the debut album by American singer-songwriter Vanessa Carlton, released in 2002 (see 2002 in music).
"A Thousand Miles" was the first single from the album and became Carlton's breakthrough hit, reaching the top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, number one in Australia and the top ten in the United Kingdom. A worldwide top ten hit, it was one of the biggest singles of 2002.[1] At the same time "A Thousand Miles" was ascending the airplay charts in America, Be Not Nobody debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 albums chart; it was successful elsewhere, reaching number seven in the UK and number twelve in Australia. Be Not Nobody was certified gold by the RIAA in June 2002, and platinum the following October.[2]
The second and third singles, "Ordinary Day" and "Pretty Baby", respectively, fell far short of the success of "A Thousand Miles". "Ordinary Day" charted inside the top forty on the U.S. Hot 100, but it failed to do so in Australia or the UK. "Pretty Baby", which was nominated for a 2003 Teen Choice Award for "Choice Love Song",[3] did not appear on the Hot 100 or the UK top seventy-five. As of late 2004 the album had sold 1.38 million copies in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan,[4] and Variety magazine reported in July 2003 that it had sold 2.3 million worldwide.[5] Billboard magazine placed Carlton at number twenty-one on its year-end "Top Pop Artists" list for 2002.[6]
The cover art for the album is based on a lithograph of the actress Sarah Bernhardt by the Czech artist Alfons Mucha.[citation needed]
