Bayston Hill

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bayston Hill is a large village and parish in the English county of Shropshire, and has the local nick-name of 'Bunkham'.

It lies 3 miles south of the county town of Shropshire, Shrewsbury, and is effectively a large suburb of that town (although it is separate). It has good transport links - the A49 and A5 both run around the village. There was once a railway station too, but this has closed (although the line is still open).

The village has a parish council which covers a parish that also acts as a borough council ward (returning two councillors to the borough council) and a county council electoral division (returning one councillor to the county council). Its population is, according to the 2001 census, 5,247 - which is larger than many towns in Shropshire (such as Clun, Craven Arms or Bishop's Castle). Indeed, this population makes the village one of the largest in the United Kingdom. The census also recorded 2,103 households.

There is a library, four pubs (Three Fishes, Fox, Compasses, Beeches), two primary schools and a small supermarket present. The village was the birth place of author Mary Webb, Battle of Britain hero Eric Lock and actor Christopher Timothy.

To the south lies Lyth Hill and to the east lies Sharpstone Hill (the latter now being a major quarry, and the hill now barely exists).
