Bayburt is the provincial capital of Turkey's Bayburt Province.

Bayburt was once an important center on the ancient Silk Route and it was visited by Marco Polo and Turkish excursionist Evliya Celebi. There are remains of its Byzantine Castle still exist. There are several interesting mosques, Turkish baths and tombstones in the city as well as the Catalcesme Underground City and the natural wonder Sirakayalar Waterfall.

The exact date for foundation of Bayburt is unknown. However it is estimated around 100 BC. It is well-known that Bayburt is occupied by Roman Empirement and after division became a part of Eastern Romans. During the Byzantine age, Bayburt was a part of state (dependent state to Byzantine) called Heldia which was 4th of separate seven division. It is also known Bayburt castle is repaired by the Byzantine king Justinianus and later on invaded by Arabs.

Turks control the area first at 1054 and next 200 years it was occupied by many different empires.

The history of Bayburt Castel dates back to 2000 BCE, although we still don't know who first established it. The Castel is being renovated by Turkish Ministry of Culture.

Bayburt has many delightful parks and open spaces like Genclik parki. There are several shops and malls.

Bayburt Otobus Terminali, located in the south of the city, is the main port to Bayburt.

The city has one football club currently competing in the Turkish 3rd League: Bayburtspor.

  • Irsadi Baba

Irsadi Baba (1806 - 1877) was one of the most famous Sufi masters of his time in the North East Anatolia. He was affiliated with one of the Uwaysi lineages of Naqshibandi Tariqa. He wrote mystical poems. He also started to write "Stories of Prophets" (Kisas-ul Enbiya) in a peotical form. His grandson Aglarbaba completed these series of poems. However, he lost the only copy of this book during the First World War. Other poems of Irsadi Baba are well-preserved and published in Turkish. Unlike his grandson Aglar Baba, Irsadi Baba used a simple laguage in his poems. He was more of a folkloric poet and he rarely refered to the Scripture and Tradition. Some of the major themes he was preoccupied was divine love (Ilah-i Ask), Reality (Hakikat) and Asceticism.
