Bay United is a VWSA (Volkswagen South Africa)-owned South African football (soccer) club, based in the city of Port Elizabeth. The franchise of struggling 1st division club Maritzburg United was purchased by VW and relocated to the Mandela Metro. After a string of poor results during the 2005/2006 season, once Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba was suspended and relieved from his duties and caretaker Sam Mbatha took over. Although he saved the club from being relegated to the 3rd tier of South African soccer, he was replaced by high-profile Zimbabwean Roy Barreto, a former Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars coach.
