Battlespire is a 1997 first-person action computer role-playing game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks, set in the world of The Elder Scrolls.
In Battlespire you take the role of an apprentice who on the day of his final test in the training facility of the Battlemages, called the Battlespire, discovers that an army of Daedra led by Mehrunes Dagon and armed with fearful Daedric Crescents has invaded and killed nearly everyone. On top of that, your partner has been held captive by Mehrunes Dagon himself. Over the course of seven levels, you must get to the top of the Battlespire and defeat Mehrunes Dagon.
Bethesda introduced a multiplayer feature that included a cooperative mode to follow the single player storyline online as well as a team-based versus mode to fight using all the same strategies from the single player. This was done through the Mplayer multiplayer network which is now Gamespy. Though no longer supported by Mplayer/Gamespy, you may still play multiplayer Battlespire through the use of the Kali multiplayer network client. It supports and works with all the features in the game.
Battlespire runs on a 16bit VESA 2.0 graphics engine using DOS. There were plans and even advertisements of a 3DFX version of Battlespire, which was discontinued near the release of Battlespire, which shipped with a software mode only. Currently there is no way to play Battlespire on modern operating systems, even with the use of DosBox. Though the current version of DosBox (.65) does have limited 16bit VESA 2.0 graphics support that will successfully boot Battlespire up, it is still unplayable on most computers.
