Battlefield Mall
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Battlefield Mall, located in Springfield, Missouri, is the largest shopping mall in the area.[1] The mall is owned by Simon Property Group. Major updates to the mall occurred in 2002.[2] Currently, it is undergoing expansion on its east side to accommodate new clients, and becoming a Lifestyle Center.
The mall's name is derived from the fact that it is located at the corner of Glenstone and Battlefield Road, a major thoroughfare in Springfield. The street name is, in turn, taken from the city of Battlefield, Missouri, which is named in honor of Battle of Wilson's Creek, a famous American Civil War battle that took place near the area. Although Springfield's other major mall, the North Town Mall, is on the verge of extinction, Battlefield Mall is still thriving.

[edit] Security incident
On June 22, 2006, ten-year-old Lydia Smith was shopping with her mother at Battlefield mall. She was wearing a bandana which was decorated with peace signs, flowers, and smiley faces. Mall security accosted her and told her to remove the bandana due to mall dress code violations, saying that the bandana was "likely to cause a disturbance".[3] However, some stores in the mall actually sell the bandanas that Smith was wearing. [4] The disturbance caused a minor uproar in local news media in the days following the incident.
