"Battlefield" is the sixth part of the progressive rock classic "Tarkus", from the album with the same name by Emerson, Lake & Palmer. It is the only part entirely written by Greg Lake, and features some of the best lyrics of the entire album.
Following Tarkus' adventures, "Battlefield" is about Tarkus' loss against the Manticore, its enemy, on the previous part of the song. Greg Lake added these lines from King Crimson's "Epitaph" to the end of the song: "Confusion will be my epitaph / As I crawl a cracked and broken path. / If we make it we can all sit back and laugh."
These lines were not sung on the studio version. However, the version included on the live album Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends has these lines added.
