The Battle of Kamino was a fictional battle in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which took place two months after the Battle of Geonosis. This battle was also known as the Defense of Kamino. There was also an additional battle known as the Second Battle of Kamino.
After learning of the Confederacy's plans to strike at the crucial cloning facilities on Kamino, the Jedi sent a defense fleet to protect the planet. Though the Jedi pilots battled bravely above, they could not stop droid forces from landing in Tipoca City. The droids' arrival prompted the activation of an elite group of clone troopers by Prime Minister Lama Su. The newly-activated ARC troopers turned the tide of the battle. They fought alongside the Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Shaak Ti. Because of losses, the Mon Calamari Commander Merai was forced to launch a last-ditch attack on what the Confederacy believed to be the location of Tipoca City's shield generator.
However, the Jedi proved to be too wily for the Mon Calamari tactician; the data gathered by the Corporate Alliance had been falsified, and Merai's efforts proved futile. In a last-ditch attack, Merai flew into the Jedi hyperspace rings, destroying himself and his ship in the process; his sacrifice gave his battleships time to retreat.
Though apparently a victory for the Republic, the battle was actually engineered by Darth Sidious and his apprentice, Darth Tyranus, to root out and destroy the traitors in the Confederacy, although a successful strike against the cloning facilities would indeed have weakened the Republic's military.

The Second Battle of Kamino was an attempt by Mandalorian and Separatist forces to eliminate the Republic's military resources by attacking their cloning facilities on Kamino.
It was assumed that there was only one cloning facility and its destruction would have been a major setback for Republic forces. This attempt was foiled by the flawless defense put up by the planet's clone garrison.
