The Battle of Czestochowa was fought in the winter of 1655 and 1656 between Sweden and Poland. The Swedish were attempting to capture the Jasna Góra monastery. Their siege was ineffective. A small force consisting of monks from Jasna Gora monastery led by their Prior fought off 9,000 Swedes, turned the course of the war and saved their sacred icon, Our Lady of Częstochowa also known as "The Black Madonna".
