The Battle of Bloody Marsh was a battle in the War of Jenkins' Ear in 1742.
On St. Simons Island near Fort Frederica, the military headquarters of the Province of Georgia during the early colonial period, on July 7, 1742, British troops under the command of General James Oglethorpe ambushed Spanish troops as they were marching single file through a passage in the marsh. The battle occurred at 3 p.m. and lasted about an hour. The Spanish troops were routed from the island, which marked the end of the Spanish efforts to invade Georgia during the War of Jenkins' Ear. Only about fifty Spanish troops were killed, which did not prevent the area being named "Bloody Marsh", due to the area being made red with blood. This was a decisive battle; the Spanish never returned to Georgia.
The Battle of Gully Hole Creek had taken place on the same Island earlier the same day, which was also won by Oglethorpe's troops.
