The Battle of Alexandria was fought on July 31, 30 BC between the forces of Octavian and Marc Antony during the final war of the Roman Republic. Although Antony's side was plagued by desertions, he still managed to win the battle. The desertions continued, however, and Octavian launched an invasion of Egypt in early August. The battle was a long and fierce trirem and birem battle but Octavian came out as the victor. As a result, Antony committed suicide. It is thought that Cleopatra committed suicide by snake bite before Octavian murdered her.
