Battiest is a small community in McCurtain County, Oklahoma. The post office was established November 1, 1926. It was named for Choctaw jurist, Byington Battiest.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 347 people, 125 households, and 99 families residing in the town. There were 162 housing units. The racial makeup of the town was 70.3% White, 37.8% Native American, and 8.1% from two or more races.
There were 125 households out of which 46.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.8% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the town the population was spread out with 35.8% under the age of 20, 5.2% from 20 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33.9 years.
The median income for a household in the town was $28,929, and the median income for a family was $33,250. The per capita income for the town was $13,175. There were 25.5% of families and 32.4% of the individuals living below the poverty line.
