The Battelle Memorial Institute is a private not-for-profit applied science and technology development company headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. The institute opened in 1929 but traces its origins to the 1923 will of Ohio industrialist Gordon Battelle which provided for its creation. Originally focusing on contract research and development work in the areas of metals and material science, it has since expanded its scope to defense, energy, environmental, transportation and health and life sciences. It is the world's largest independent consulting, research and development organization. Battelle has played a major role in the development of projects including the Xerox process, Snopake correction fluid, Universal Product Code and compact disc digital storage.
In addition to operating three of its own research facilities, as of 2005, Battelle holds management and operations contracts with the United States Department of Energy for the following national laboratories:
- Brookhaven National Laboratory (through Brookhaven Science Associates, LLC - a collaboration between Battelle and State University of New York at Stony Brook)
- Idaho National Laboratory (through the Battelle Energy Alliance - a collaboration between Battelle, BWX Technologies, Inc., Washington Group International, Electric Power Research Institute and an alliance of universities)
- National Renewable Energy Laboratory (in partnership with Midwest Research Institute)
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory (through UT-Battelle, LLC - a collaboration between Battelle and the University of Tennessee)
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
Battelle ranks number 41 on the 2005 List of Top 100 Federal Prime Contractors (down from 35 in 2004).1
