Bate Collection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bate Collection is a collection of musical instruments, mainly for Western classical music from medieval times onwards. It is housed in Oxford University's Faculty of Music near Christ Church on St. Aldate's. The collection is available for academic study and also performances of historical music.

The instruments include woodwind, brass, percussion and keyboards. There is also a collection of bows, as well as a complete workshop of the English bow-maker William C Retford. A Javanese gamelan is kept in the Pitt Rivers Museum Balfour Building at 60 Banbury Road.

The collection is named after Philip Bate and includes an archive of his papers.
