I'm an American living in Knoxville, Tennessee, though I'm originally from Maryville. I'm a student at the University of Tennessee working toward dual Bachelor of Science degrees in both history and political science. I hope to be commissioned an officer in the United States Air Force upon graduation.
Politically I am a conservative in the tradition of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush. I subscribe to many of the beliefs held by the Christian right and neoconservative elements of the Republican Party, with a few shades of paleoconservatism thrown in for good measure. As far as "hot button" issues go, a summary of my positions would include support for an aggressive foreign policy, safeguarding the Judeo-Christian social tradition, and favoring a strict constructionist interpretation of the U.S. Constitution. I am always willing to partake in civilized debate on my talk page.
Regardless of my personal beliefs, I take the -pedia in Wikipedia seriously, and strive to uphold a neutral point of view in both my edits and those of other contributors.
My username, Basileus, is a Greek language word meaning "king." It is perhaps best known in English as a title used by Byzantine monarchs, but also has a longer history of use in Ancient Greece. (For more information on the etymology and history of my pseudonym, please see Basileus.)
[edit] Interests
While I make no claims to matching the greatness of other basilei (Alexander the Great, the Byzantine Emperors from Justinian II onwards, etc.), I do find it a fitting nom de plume for someone interested in such diverse subjects as:
- Ancient Rome
- The Byzantine Empire
- Imperialism, new imperialism, and colonialism
- Military history and the history of warfare
- Political science
- The culture, history, and politics of the United Kingdom; especially:
- the British Empire and subsequent Commonwealth of Nations
- the monarchy and royal family
- The culture, history, and politics of the United States; especially:
- American exceptionalism
- the 1950s and early 1960s
- United States imperialism (American empire, manifest destiny, Pax Americana, spread-eagleism, etc.)
[edit] Contributions
I created the University of Tennessee article at 15:07 UTC on January 6, 2004 (initially located at University of Tennessee at Knoxville). I hope to one day see it listed among Wikipedia's outstanding featured articles.
