Bastiat Free University is a virtual university, with no physical campus. It consists of a group of experimental colleges seeking to provide quality higher education outside of government control. The primary goal of BFU is student self-directed learning at no or little cost. A secondary goal is defined as "renaissance education," avoiding subject divisions and specialization by pursuing diverse knowledge integrated with action. The objective of these goals is to "allow the student to prepare themselves for the emerging information age rather than the attenuating industrial age" - Allan R. Wallace, BFU Rector.

The transitional focus of Bastiat Free University utilizes an open learning model emphasizing adaptability, reputation, and Coalesced knowledge. BFU students are seen as readying themselves to participate in a relationship based society where personal networks will replace the structurally defined interactions within bureaucratic institutions. "Self directed learning for visionaries and entrepreneurs" is the phrase used at the university to encapsulate this educational philosophy.

BFU is unaccredited and has proudly indicated it intends to stay unaccredited. Lack of accreditation is seen as desirable for controlling expenses and bureaucratic regulation. An accredited degree is required by many employers and government licensing organizations -- potential students should consider this before seeking their degree. BFU students are primarily part of an emerging networking cohort, or the Netcohort. In the Netcohort positive individual attributes and responsibility are proving more important than credentials.

The "Free" in Bastiat Free University is described as "free as in freedom or as in free speech." Registration and monitoring of courses is also offered free (as in no cost). If a degree is sought, the student will incur small administrative and course review fees. Bastiat Free University defines their offered no or low cost education as "cost appropriate learning."

The university has four colleges. These are The College for Entrepreneurs, The College of Human Interaction, The College of Liberty, and The School of Theology. Also offered at Bastiat Free University are Master's Courses created by highly successful individuals based on influences that helped them create their success.

Bastiat Free University is named for French economist and writer Claude Frédéric Bastiat. He was both an entertaining and insightful free trade advocate and a champion of private education.
