Basser College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Basser College is a residential college at the University of New South Wales in Kensington, Sydney, Australia. Accepting its first students in 1959, making it the oldest residential college on the University campus. The College was named after Sir Adolph Basser, a Polish immigrant and philanthropist. The college became coeducational in 1965 and currently houses approximately 134 university students (including Hic McGrumpy - a long term resident) and 6 residential academic staff (most of whom specialise in "tutoring").

Basser College is divided into two quadrangles, boys and girls quads; both grassy courtyards, originally named due to the division by gender when the college became coeducational in 1965. The bedrooms, each with its own hand basin, vary in size between 8 and 14 square metres.

Along with Phillip Baxter College and Goldstein College, Basser formed part of The Kensington Colleges, a self-managing entity which now falls under the jurisdiction of the UNSW Housing Office.
