Basile is a town in Evangeline Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 1,660 at the 2000 census.

Basile is located at 30°29′7″N, 92°36′2″W (30.485148, -92.600589)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.1 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,660 people, 629 households, and 417 families residing in the town. The population density was 562.2/km² (1,455.5/mi²). There were 696 housing units at an average density of 235.7/km² (610.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 81.08% White, 17.83% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.54% from two or more races. 1.39% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 629 households out of which 34.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.20.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 83.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $18,922, and the median income for a family was $23,008. Males had a median income of $21,389 versus $13,603 for females. The per capita income for the town was $10,568. 31.9% of the population and 30.3% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.7% of those under the age of 18 and 21.5% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
