Basarab Panduru, (born July 11, 1970 in Mârzăneşti, Teleorman), is a former Romanian football player and current coach of FC Farul Constanţa.

[edit] Career as Player

Panduru started his professional career with FCM Reşiţa where he played between 1987 and 1991, before being signed by Steaua Bucharest at the beginning of 1991. Panduru's first game with Steaua was in the Romanian Cup, when the Steaua's officials did not take into consideration that just prior leaving FCM Reşiţa, Panduru was set to miss the next game due to yellow cards, therefore Steaua lost that game after a federal decision.

As soon as he joined Steaua he became an important part of the team. In 1995 however he leaved Romania to play for SL Benfica. The life in the capital of Portugal wasn't that easy, therefore he is loaned to Neuchatel Xamax for half a season, before re-joining SL Benfica at the start of the 1996-97 season.

In 1998 he is bought by SL Benfica's main rivals from FC Porto but fails to make great impact and leaves Portugal to Brazil, thus becoming the first ever, and so far the only, Romanian footballer to play in Brazil, choosing to play for Internacional Porto Alegre.

In 1999 he returned to Portugal and signed for SC Salgueiros, the third team of Porto but after only half-a-season decides to retire and become coach.

During his career Panduru won 22 caps for Romania, scoring one goal.

[edit] Career as Coach

Panduru's first coaching agreement was the one with FCU Politehnica Timişoara and was signed in 2002. At Timişoara he met his former teammate from Steaua, Anton Doboş, now the team's co-owner. The couple work well together for a while, but in 2004 Panduru basically sacked himself when he made a bad remark, by saying: "The defenders are not footballers, they are only the one who help the footballers". What Panduru did not take into consideration was the fact that Anton Doboş, his boss, played as a defender.

He signed a new contract, this time with Oţelul Galaţi for the second half of the 2004 - 05 season, but leaves the team to sign with FC Vaslui in the summer of 2005, from where he was sacked after only few games. He is the current coach of FC Farul Constanţa.
