Barwick-in-Elmet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Barwick-in-Elmet is a village on the outskirts of Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is one of only two places in the area to be explicitly associated with the ancient kingdom of Elmet, the other being Sherburn-in-Elmet. It is part of the civil parish of Barwick in Elmet and Scholes.

Barwick-in-Elmet is referred to locally as simply Barwick, with a silent 'w' and is noted for its Maypole and Maypole raising, which when announced as a public event typically brings large crowds to the village.
