Bartholomew Sulivan

Bartholomew James Sulivan, British sailor and hydrographer, born 1810, died 1890

He was a leading advocate of the value of nautical surveying in relation to naval operations. His early career included service on HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's voyage of 1836, and during the Crimean War he performed invaluable service in the campaign in the Baltic. He rose to the rank of Vice Admiral and was also a distinguished member of the Board of Trade.
