Barsboldia sicinskii Maryanska and Osmolska, 1981 |
Barsboldia (meaning "of Barsbold") was an unusually large hadrosaurid dinosaur which lived during the Late Cretaceous Period. Its fossils were found in Mongolia, the only hadrosaurid specimens to have been discovered in Asia. Named after Mongolian paleontologist Rinchen Barsbold, the type species, B. sicinskii, was first described by Maryanska and Osmolska in 1981.
Barsboldia was 10 meters (35 feet) in length, 4 meters (13 feet) high and weighed 2 tons. It had a hollow crest and tall spines along its vertebrae which may have formed a sail.
Some scientists argue that it is not a valid genus and should be considered the same as Hypacrosaurus.
