Barry Van Dyke is an actor and the second son of legendary actor and entertainer, Dick Van Dyke, and nephew of Jerry Van Dyke. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on July 31, 1951 and has one older brother, Christian, and two younger sisters, Stacy and Carrie Beth.
Barry's TV debut was as Florian, a violin-toting nine year old in "The Talented Neighborhood" episode of the classic The Dick Van Dyke Show. He worked behind the scenes on subsequent ventures of his father's, and has co-starred with him in two series, The Van Dyke Show (which was cancelled after just five episodes), and Diagnosis Murder, as well as since becoming a superstar in his own right building up an extensive filmography. He also wrote and directed several episodes of Diagnosis Murder.
He portrayed Lieutenant Detective Steve Sloan on the show Diagnosis Murder, which finished an eight-year run in May of 2001. Two TV movies were also aired in the spring of 2002. Barry's other television work includes Galactica 1980, Airwolf (4th season), Gun Shy, Mr. Mom, and The Redd Foxx Show, as well as many guest appearances, including a major role in a 2-hour / 2-part episode of The A-Team ('The Bend In The River'). His films include Foxfire Light, It Happened at Lakewood Manor, and Casino.
Barry Van Dyke met his wife Mary Van Dyke when they were sixteen and he was working as a ticket-taker at a neighborhood movie theatre. They were married seven years later, in 1974 and they have four children, Carey, Shane, Wes and Taryn. He co-stars with his children in two episodes of Diagnosis: Murder, both written by Barry himself. Carey and his wife Anne made them grandparents in 2001, with the birth of their daughter Ava. In 2006, he reunited with his father Dick Van Dyke to film the TV movie Murder 101 where he played a former cop who teams up with a criminologist (played by his father) to solve a murder case.
He appeared in television commercials for Garden State Life Insurance Company from 2000-2001.
