Barry Conlon

Barry Conlon (born 1 October 1978 in Dublin) is an Irish football player, he currently plays as an attacker for English League Two club Darlington.

Conlon. Darlo's super striker. Baz, as he is known to his mates, has played for many clubs during his career starting out at Queens Park Rangers.

Conlon's upbringing on the mean streets of Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan undoubtedly played a role in his no nonsense style of play. Displaying the attributes that would put a stereotypical "British centre forward" to shame, the sight of Conlon's name on the team sheet has been enough to send players into early retirement. Famous for kicking player's shins as often as the ball, Conlon's discipline recored has often landed him in hot water with the F.A.

Barry Conlon's two-week trial with Middlesbrough in the mid 1990's has gone down in the annals of footballing history. Whilst on trial, Barry notched a superb hat-trick, a clearly impressed Bryan Robson wanted to get the Monaghan man signed and offered him a reasonably good contract for an untried teenager. Barry, however, was not impressed and in making reference to the recently signed Fabrizio Ravanelli, he argued, "that's a shite contract, that grey hoor is getting £40'000 and he didn't score at all". An unimpressed Robson promptly informed Barry that he would be withdrawing his original offer and to pack his bags.

Conlon has vowed never to play for Ireland whilst Steve Staunton is manager and following Baz's opening day hat-trick for the Quakers, Staunton could do more foolish things that pick up the phone to Barry Conlon, in light of Robbie Keane's liking of Dublin night clubs.

He signed his first contract on the 1st August 1996. After his first year at Rangers he was released and quickly joined Manchester City. His appearances were limited to just 1 league start and 6 substitutes and he was loaned out to Plymouth Argyle 18 months later. He spent the next six months on loan and played 13 games scoring two goals. He was released by City at the end of his contract.

Lowly Southend then snapped him up and fortunately he only spent 10 months at the club when York City came in and bought him for an incredible and unlikely £100k.

Conlon has never been shall we say a prolific goalscorer, he scored just 11 goals in his two season at City. But that didn't matter to Darlo and Gary Bennett signed him up for £60k.

Baz's first season at the club was not that impressive. He became a hate figure to some fans, whilst others could see what he did off the ball. Last season he improved greatly and netted 17 times to boot. He is a major linchpin in the side as most play comes through Barry, even though he is a striker. His first touch is immense although it does look like he handballs a lot.

Last season Conlon won Darlo Uncovered's player of the year award.

Conlon had a not so good spell at Barnsley FC where he scored a total of 1 goal all of the 05/06 season despite starting the season in the first team. On his return to Darlington, he scored a hat-trick on his debut which was look up with laughter by the Barnsley fans.
