Barry Clifford is an underwater archaeological explorer best known for discovering the remains of the wrecked ship Whydah in 1984 after a 15 years long search.
The Whydah was the flagship of the pirate Black Sam and was wrecked in a storm off Cape Cod in 1717 with only two of the 146 men crew surviving. Among those killed were Black Sam himself and the juvenile pirate John King. Clifford's discovery of the Whydah is one of only two discoveries of confirmed pirate ships in modern times (the other being the Queen Anne's Revenge discovered by Mark Wilde-Ramsing in 1999).
