Barrington River
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Barrington River is a tidal river that arises southeastern Massachusetts, joins with the Palmer River to form the Warren River, and empties into the Narragansett Bay at Warren, Rhode Island. It forms a small portion of the eastern border between Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The river begins in Seekonk, Massachusetts at the Mobil Dam. (Above the dam it is known as the Runnin's River.) It then flows southeast for 6 km through extensive wetlands in East Providence and Barrington, Rhode Island until it joins the Palmer River. Hundred Acre Cove, a large salt marsh, lies alongside the river some 2 km below the dam. Total river distance from dam to bay is about 24 km (15 miles).
The river is popular for boating. It has also historically been important for shellfishing, but since May 1998 has been permanently closed due to fecal coliform pollution.
