Barrie Island, Ontario

Barrie Island is a township in the Canadian province of Ontario. Located in the Manitoulin District, the township comprises a separate island off the northern shore of Manitoulin Island which is separated from the main island by two small bays joined by a narrow unnamed strait.

The island is connected to Manitoulin by Highway 540A, which crosses the water via a bridge at the narrowest part of the strait.

The township had a permanent population of 50 in the 2001 Canadian census; the island also has a significant summer recreational population.

John Gordon Lane, the Member of Provincial Parliament for Algoma—Manitoulin from 1971 to 1987, was born in Barrie Island.
