The Barrett M98 is a extended-range, semi-automatic sniper rifle, introduced at the 1998 Shot Show. This rifle chambers a .338 Lapua_Magnum cartridge and has a gas-operated semi automatic action. The stock is made of fiberglass reinforced polyamide plastic to reduce weight.

There is only one Barrett M98 rifle in existence, residing on the wall of Barrett Firearms' Research and Development office. It has never been used in combat.
Introduction of this rifle has been delayed due to the introduction of the Barrett Model 99.

This rifle was featured in a black color scheme on the television program Future Weapons. Its image has been used as a replacement for the AWM/AWP/L96 Sniper Rifle in the PC game Counter-Strike. It was noted as the fourth best weapon in the world on "Ultimate", a television program on the Discovery channel. This gun also exists in an airsoft version.
Barrett M98 is in Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike named as the LRS .338 sniper, but it is unconfirmed so far.
