Barra brava

Barra brava is a name for organized supporters groups of football teams in Latin America. This style of supporting is very similar to European ultras. It includes standing throughout the match, singing and other enthusiastic behavior. Some barras bravas have developed reputations for hooliganism. The term originated in Argentina in the 50's and 60's, but it has spread throughout the Americas. In Brazil, the organized torcida plays a similar role.

The term is used by a Spanish-language supporters' group for MLS side DC United (see main article: La Barra Brava). The group was founded by Bolivian immigrants in support of original United players Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry and Jaime Moreno. Since the formation of the Barra in 1996, the group has welcomed fans of different nationalities who, in tandem with their brother club Screaming Eagles, make the movable bleachers at RFK Stadium bounce in time with the rhythm of their singing and chanting.
